The Bridesmaids

Co-ordinating my wedding dress with bridesmaid dresses was a problem for a number of reasons. My 3 sisters and I all live in different places, their changing hair colours and they are not all the same dress size.

After much deliberation I came to the conclusion that one of the things I have never

My sisters and I all have very different personalities but a bond, which means we all laugh at the same parts of a film. These personalities needed to shine through without of course outshining the bride!

The dress I choose for them was a dress I thought about possibly buying to wear myself for an evening out. Floor length silk Grecian in a bronze cappuccino colour; a goddess dress.

During one of our many Skype conference calls it was decided that they would all wear golden sandals. One sister had seen some in Wallis; another fancied a pair from Faith and the third sister, Jimmy Choo. Needless to say I sidestepped around the Jimmy Choo suggestion and advised each of them to choose whichever shoes they wanted, as it was important that elements of their own personal styles shone through.
However, I as the Bride reserved the right to wear the only pair of Jimmy Choo’s!

This decision also affected hairstyles. None of us have ever favoured show pony hair up styles. So all of the bridesmaids and myself decided on hair down with a bit up to the side or not.

I think there are lessons to be learnt by letting the bridesmaids have an opinion on how they should look on the day. As the bride you obviously have the last word and should choose the dress. But listen to their ideas and work together.

Think about the outcome and by that I mean the photographs when making your decision. It is not worth stamping your feet and putting them in a fitted fishtail get-up when one of them is a size 8 and the other two, size 16. They will all look miserable and self-conscious in the photographs.

A good way of researching this important element of your wedding is to watch a film called 27 Dresses ,which came out this summer 2008 and should be available on DVD now. The film follows the story of a girl who is always the bridesmaid and never the bride. She has a wardrobe in her home full of bridesmaid dresses she has worn over the years. Some are pretty, others are so-so and there are a few absolute stinkers. The film is a comedy and obviously pokes fun at the wedding scenario. However I found it interesting to see just how bad some dresses can get.

Just remember that you could one day be the bridesmaid…
