Ensure you get the right people for the job with Ulster Bride’s guide to who does what!

MOTHER-OF-THE-BRIDE
• Helps draw up the guest list and plans aspects of the reception.
• Attends the bride and bridesmaids’ fittings and helps source accessories.
• Helps bride and bridal party get ready on the morning.
• Accompanies the bridesmaids to the ceremony.
• Is last to be seated at the ceremony before the bride’s entrance.
• Attends the signing of the register.
• Acts as reception co-host, welcoming guests and circulating.
• Aids bridesmaids with any gifts brought to the reception.
• Usually stays at the reception venue until last guests depart.


CHIEF BRIDESMAID
• Attends rehearsals.
• Accompanies the bride on shopping trips to help choose her dress, accessories, bridesmaids’ dresses and going away outfit.
• Attends fittings.
• Organises the hen night/ weekend.
• On the day, helps the bride to dress and ensures that she is on schedule.
• Keeps in her possession the bride’s emergency/touch-up kit.
• Holds the bouquet during the service and returns it after the signing of the registry.
• Ensures that any young bridesmaids are dressed correctly in good time and are also holding the right bouquet.
• Escorts bridal party to the ceremony venue (around 10 minutes before the bride departs).
• Makes sure that the bride’s dress, veil, train and bouquet are in place before walking down the aisle.
• Lines everyone up, ready for walking down the aisle.
• Exits the venue on the arm of the best man and escorts the bridesmaids and any pageboys to the reception.
• Helps bride change into her going away outfit and looks after her gown.
• At the reception, stands in the receiving line to greet guests.
• Has her first dance with the best man.


BRIDESMAIDS
• Liaise closely with the chief bridesmaid.
• Help any younger members of the bridal party.
• Follow behind the chief bridesmaid when walking up the aisle.
• Depart for the reception with the chief bridesmaid.
• Mingle with the guests.


FATHER-OF-THE-BRIDE
• Travels with the bride to the ceremony venue.
• Walks the bride down the aisle on his right arm.
• Sits to the left of aisle beside the mother-of-the-bride.
• Attends the signing of the register.
• During the recessional, escorts the groom’s mother down the aisle.
• Acts as reception co-host, welcoming guests.
• Is the first to speak when speeches are announced at the reception venue.


BEST MAN
• Attends any rehearsals planned.
• Runs through the day with the groom and checks that he has everything he needs.
• Liaises with the chief bridesmaid to ensure all tasks and duties have been carried out in the run-up to the big day.
• Helps out with the couple’s gift from the groomsmen.
• Arranges the stag night/ weekend.
• Arranges transport to and from the ceremony for the groom.
• Ensures the ushers are wearing the correct attire.
• Is ready before the groom in order to help him get ready.
• Ensures the groom is at the church in good time (at least 30 minutes before).
• Keeps those rings safe until it’s time!
• Ensures that the buttonholes and service sheets are at the church.
• Sits to the right of the aisle at the front with the groom.
• At the reception, he stands in the receiving line to greet guests.
• Circulates and introduces guests.
• Makes his own speech.
• Reads out cards or messages of good wishes.
• Looks after the honeymoon documentation and baggage (if the couple are departing directly after the reception).
• Is in charge of settling any final cash payments or tips on the day.
• Ensures that the groom’s attire is looked after and returned, if necessary.
• Is normally last to leave the reception venue.


USHERS/GROOMSMEN
• Answer directly to and support the best man.
• Escort the bridesmaids throughout the day and be on standby if they should need any help.
• At the service, greet guests as they arrive and hand out service sheets.
• Guide groom’s parents, mother-of-the-bride (chief usher) and guests to their seats (ensuring each side is balanced).
• Ensure that there are a sufficient number of plain coloured umbrellas at the ceremony.
• Inform guests, upon arrival, of any photographic or confetti restrictions.
• Keep an eye on the door to let the best man know when the bride has arrived.
• Ensure that guests leave the service for the reception efficiently and know how to get there.
• Ensure that the ceremony venue is left tidy and check for any property left behind.
• Help guests find their designated tables at the reception.
• Assist the photographer in organising friends and family for portraits throughout the day.
• Help the best man organise any transport for guests to the reception.
